Do Min-joon is an alien that landed on Earth in the year 1609 during the Joseon Dynasty. As his spaceship is broken, he is stranded on the planet for the next four centuries. He possesses a near-perfect appearance, enhanced physical abilities involving his vision, hearing and speed, and a cynical, jaded view regarding human beings. He meets a young girl whom he saves from death, but later on she gives her life saving him.
As time goes by, Min-joon is forced to take on a new identity every ten years, as his human appearance never ages.
In the present he works as a college professor and finds out that due to a comet coming in three months, he will be able to return to his home planet. In the meantime he accidentally meets famous actress Cheon Song-yi, the biggest Hallyu star in Korea, when she moves in next door to his luxurious apartment and also turns out to be attending his classes at college. Song-yi is an obnoxious, entitled attention seeker, someone who became a top star in her teens and never learned how to live a normal life. Min-joon finds out that Song-yi looks like the young girl he fell in love with in the Joseon era. He tries to keep himself away from her, as he needs to leave the planet.
However, Song-yi gets entangled in the dangerous game of Lee Jae-kyung, the elder brother of Hwi-kyung, who has been her friend since middle school and is in love with her. As Jae-kyung tries to silence Song-yi, Min-joon finds himself saving her multiple times and eventually the neighbours fall for each other. But Jae-kyung turns out to be much more dangerous than Min-joon suspected and he mysteriously also starts to lose control over his superpowers, making his only friend and confindant, Lawyer Jang worried about his life and return to space.

Pharmacy School

You Should Not Go to Pharmacy School if…

  1. You are not fascinated by how a human body works. This is the basis for healthcare. From physiology, to pathophysiology, to pharmacology… it’s about the human body!
  2. You hate chemistry. By the time I graduate, I will have taken at least 32 credits of chemistry courses/chemistry labs. Many drugs are chemical compounds, so learning how they work is a big part of the curriculum. There is no way around it.
  3. You are not willing to sacrifice. You’re putting in at least 6-8 years of hard work before you can actually start your career. Talk about delayed gratification! If you’re the kid who would take one marshmallow immediately instead of 2 marshmallows later, pharmacy might drive you crazy. I think the secret is accepting that the journey is the reward (which seems bizarre because it’s a hard journey). But there’s a sense of satisfaction and self-fulfillment that can only come from hard work and perseverance.
  4. You do not like people. Your patients are people. Your healthcare colleagues are people.
  5. You give up easily. Pharmacy school is all about resilience. Even if you’re studying for 10-12 hours a day for multiple days, you can still do very poorly on an exam. And you have to accept it, pick your ego back up, and just try to improve on the next one. Hard work does not always equate to success; and that’s okay! Next time! It’s one out of many, and you’ll win in the long run.

brain works

How to get the most out of your brain
1. Make sure you get plenty of exercise: For example, “Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., found that adult mice who ran on an exercise wheel whenever they felt like it gained twice as many new cells in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved in learning and memory, than mice who sat around all day discussing Lord of the Rings in Internet chat rooms.”
2. Expose yourself to novel experiences: This forms new connections in the brain, and gets underused areas working again. The benefit to you is an active, alert brain.
3. Be curious and ask “why?”: The brain is designed to question and to think. Thus, you build new neural pathways when you search for new solutions.
4. Laugh more: This releases endorphins – the body’s feel good hormones – and shakes up our thinking, and disrupts habitual patterns.
5. Eat more fish: Fish contains essential nutrients that nourish the brain. This is especially important for the young children, and the elderly (as it builds new connections, and staves off dementia.
6. Reduce your consumption of saturated fats: “When researchers at the University of Toronto put rats on a 40-percent-fat diet, the rats lost ground in several areas of mental function, including memory, spatial awareness and rule learning. The problems became worse with a diet high in saturated fats … Also, fat can reduce the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your brain, and it may also slow down the metabolism of glucose, the form of sugar the brain utilizes as food.”
7. Get plenty of sleep: Sleeping on problems, and on new information, can improve our understanding and assist with retention.
8. Do important tasks when your brain is most awake: Every 90 minutes, we cycle through period of peak and low consciousness. To master key tasks, do them when you’re most alert, and not when you’re drowsy, or about to fall asleep.
9. Develop concentration: We need to learn to focus and to fully concentrate to develop our thinking and increase our brain’s connections. But being constantly distracted interrupts this crucial process.
10. Make time to play: Play encourages us to be more creative in our thinking, to develop better strategies, and think outside the box.
